Hospital Going Smoke-free

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital will be 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free on all surrounding grounds and facilities owned, leased or operated by the hospital beginning on Monday, spokesman Peter Haigney said.

The campaign against smoking cigarettes and cigarettes is related to the hospital’s mission as a comprehensive cancer center, said David Fernandez, the hospital’s vice president for oncology services. That mission is not limited to clinical practice, Fernandez said.

“We are proud of our clinical programs and capabilities, but it is equally important for us to serve as an advocate for cancer prevention, education and research,” he said. “We believe going tobacco-free is a natural extension of our mission, and we are committed to providing the necessary support for individuals who may need assistance with quitting smoking cigarettes or using tobacco products.”

The hospital’s smoking cigarettes-cessation resources include the Stop Smoking Group launched by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s Tobacco Dependence Program. The group meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s Learning Room, 195 Little Albany St. The group offers free treatment to help individuals quit smoking cigarettes. For information, contact Donna Richardson at 732-235-8223 or stopsmoking cigarettes@umdnj.edu.
